Save Venice recently received an urgent request from the Director of Venice’s Ca’ Rezzonico Museum to help save the 18th-century alcove wallpaper of this bedchamber, which is in critical need of conservation treatment and suffering from numerous tears and a grimy sheen.
This precious example of Rococo interior decoration originally came from the Palazzo Carminati at San Stae and was likely produced by the Remondini workshop of Bassano del Grappa, famed for their prints and wallpaper designs. The design is a harmonious pattern of classical ruins and small figures in a gray palette with hints of blue, green, and white.
Conservation treatment would correct warped framing support, poor past restoration attempts, and prevent potential insect infestation. Treatment is immediately needed to avoid further decay and permanent loss of this fragile medium. Once removed from its frames and cleaned, conservators would reline each panel, restoring the original shape and applying protective corner borders.
Restoration cannot begin until a sponsor is found. You can play a direct role in the preservation of this rare decorative art by adopting the project today. Please contact kim@savevenice.org for more information.
