Celebrating 50 Years of Save Venice

Oct 26, 2021

After many months of great anticipation, members of the Save Venice Board of Directors recently reunited in Venice to view the organization’s current restorations and to consider new projects. The group visited the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello and the Italian Synagogue in the Jewish Ghetto of Venice to view the progress of Save Venice’s 50th Anniversary Campaign. They were joined by special guests including Grand Benefactors of the Torcello campaign, Honorary Board Member Jon Landau and his wife Barbara, whose generous support has made the conservation of the Madonna Hodegetria mosaic in the presbytery possible, as well as Grand Benefactors of the Italian Synagogue campaign, Mary and Howard S. Frank.

The recent activities in Venice continued with the inauguration of Palma il Giovane’s Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria altarpiece and marble altar and frame in the Basilica dei Frari. The restored ensemble was presented to the public on October 7, 2021, in the presence of Save Venice Chairman Frederick Ilchman, President Tina Walls, Vice-President Alberto Nardi, parish priest Father Lino Pellanda, Don Gianmatteo Caputo from the Catholic Diocese of Venice, Devis Valenti from the Venice branch of the Ministry of Culture, and restorers Giulio Bono and Egidio Arlango. This project is dedicated in honor of Terry Stanfill, Vice-President Emerita of Save Venice, the longest-serving board member of the organization, and founder of the California Chapter.

On October 9, an intimate group of board members and special guests were invited to a special 50×50 celebration by Save Venice-Italia member Ferigo Foscari and his wife Claudia at their exquisite home on the terraferma, Villa Foscari “La Malcontenta,” designed by the architect Andrea Palladio. We gratefully thank our hosts for a magical evening, the perfect end to an exhilarating week in Venice.
