Conservation of Nani Ceiling in the Ca' Rezzonico Museum Nearly Completed

Jan 18, 2019

At the Ca’ Rezzonico Museum in Venice, conservators are now in the final phase of restoring the elaborate Nani ceiling thanks to funding from the Boston Chapter of Save Venice. Over the last several months structural issues were corrected, the original blue background of the ceiling was recovered, and the carved and gilded wooden frames and decorative pieces were cleaned of heavy overpainting revealing the delicate details that had been obscured.

Canvas paintings by Francesco Maffei and Girolamo Brusaferro also underwent a surface cleaning and conservative maintenance treatment and were reinstalled in the ceiling. Conservators are making the final integrations of small areas of loss on the painted surface of the ceiling and expect to complete the entire project in February.
