Seven paintings restored with funding from Save Venice will travel to Washington, D.C. to be featured in the exhibition Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice (March 24–July 7, 2019) at the National Gallery of Art. It will be the first major retrospective of Jacopo Tintoretto in North America, offering a rare opportunity to experience 45 paintings and nearly a dozen drawings spanning the artist’s prolific career.
Save Venice restorations highlighted in the exhibition include Saint Martial in Glory with Saints Peter and Paul (1549), The Deposition of Christ (c. 1562), The Forge of Vulcan, The Wedding of Ariadne and Bacchus (1578), The Baptism of Christ, The Apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Jerome (c. 1580), and The Entombment of Christ (1594). Innovative conservation methods allowed conservators to remove disfiguring varnishes and heavy overpainting to reveal the brilliance of Tintoretto’s color palette and striking details. Learn More
The exhibition is co-curated by Frederick Ilchman, Chair of the Art of Europe and Mrs. Russell W. Baker Curator of Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Save Venice Chairman, and independent scholar Robert Echols.
