Venice Celebrates 500th Birthday of Titian's Assumption of the Virgin: Save Venice Announces Restoration

Sep 28, 2018

Last week it was announced that Save Venice will fund an historic restoration of Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin in the Basilica di Santa Maria Glorisa Dei Frari thanks to major funding from Beatrice de Santo Domingo and the Jasmine Charity Trust in honor of Regina Jaglom Wachter.

Titian’s monumental Assunta was unveiled on the high altar of the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari on May 19, 1518. To celebrate the masterpiece’s 500th birthday, the church has organized a series of concerts, presentations, guided visits, and a celebratory mass. The Italian postal service will also release a special edition commemorative postmark.

The inaugural ceremony of the Assunta 500 will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 8:30PM with a keynote address by Dr. Paola Marini, Director of the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia. On Saturday, May 19, 2018, the church will host an open day with guided visits followed by mass at 6:30PM, presided by Mons. Francesco Moraglia, Patriarch of Venice.
