This small devotional painting of the Virgin and Child is a fine example of the work of Sienese artist Stefano di Giovanni, called Sassetta, in the 1430s. Conservator Claudia Vittori has carefully removed darkened varnishes and garish overpainting from this panel, revealing the delicate contours and intricate details of Sassetta’s exquisite work. We are grateful to Save Venice Board member, Mel Oldenburg, for generously making treatment possible.
The painting is today housed in the Palazzo Cini Gallery in Dorsoduro, the original home of Vittorio Cini (1887–1977). In addition to the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, dedicated in memory of Cini’s son Giorgio in 1951, his palazzo in Dorsoduro opened as the Palazzo Cini Gallery in 1984.
