Vital Preservation Efforts Underway at the Jewish Cemetery on the Lido
JANUARY 2024
At the Jewish Cemetery of the island of Lido, the Jewish Community is undertaking urgently-needed heavy landscaping work to clear away decades of overgrowth around the cemetery’s tombs and headstones, removing and pruning precarious trees, and creating new pathways to allow better access to the cemetery’s 18th, 19th, and 20th-century sections. Save Venice’s support for this first phase of vital work was made possible thanks to generous funding from Pamela & Paul Austin + The P. Austin Family Foundation honouring the memory of Lawrence B. Austin. This first phase of vital work is a crucial step in the Jewish Community’s major undertaking to preserve and revitalize the cemetery and improve its accessibility and safety for visitors. These improvements will allow for the identification and documentation of the tombs and headstones, creating a renewed interest in and fostering better understanding of the importance of this Jewish heritage site.
In 1999, Save Venice funded the conservation of the nearby ancient Jewish Cemetery as well as treatment of tombstones and sarcophagi in the “new” Jewish Cemetery in 1997 and 2004.
On the occasion of the upcoming annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2024, the Jewish Community of Venice together with the City of Venice have organized a broad calendar of more than 60 commemorative events to remember the victims of the Holocaust, the effects of the racial laws, and all those who put their lives at risk to protect the persecuted and deported Jews.
