In this talk, Cynthia Saltzman will speak about her most recent publication, Plunder: Napoleon’s Theft of Veronese’s ‘Feast’ and the fate of this Venetian masterpiece since its removal by French troops in 1797. Cynthia Saltzman is an author who has written about 19th-century European art in the context of economics, politics and culture. She has published three books: The Portrait of Dr. Gachet: The story of a van Gogh Masterpiece (Viking, 1998); Old Masters, New World: America’s Raid on Europe’s Great Pictures (Viking, 2008); and Plunder: Napoleon’s Thefot of Veronese’s ‘Feast’ (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2021). She holds a BA from Harvard University in Fine Arts, an MA from the University of California, at Berkeley, in the History of Art (1975), and an MBA from Stanford University (1977). She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
