Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) was a prolific composer and singer of the Italian Baroque period who published eight volumes of her own music. Musicologist Claire Fontijn explores the patronage from noblewomen and rulers that supported Strozzi’s career, focusing in particular on the works of Strozzi dedicated to Vittoria della Rovere (op. 1), Eleonora Gonzaga (op. 2), Anna de’ Medici (op. 5) and Sophie of Hannover (op. 8). Prof. Fontijn will examine the dedications and the music, as well as links to the pieces by Strozzi that were performed at the Save Venice Boston benefit concert in December 2023.
Presented by Claire Fontijn, the Phyllis Henderson Carey Professor of Music at Wellesley College. Her prizewinning monograph Desperate Measures: The Life and Music of Antonia Padoani Bembo (2006) was followed by The Vision of Music in Saint Hildegard’s Scivias –Synthesizing Image, Text, Notation and Theory (2013); most recently, she edited a volume with Routledge entitled Uncovering Music of Early European Women (1250-1750).
