Save Venice members are invited to attend an illustrated conversation between the editors of two recent publications on the works of Paolo Caliari, the artist known as Veronese: Paolo Veronese by David Rosand†, Edited by Mary E. Frank (Harvey Miller Publishers, 2023) and The Church of San Sebastiano in Venice: A Guide (Marsilio Editori, 2024) featuring texts by Xavier Salomon, Davide Gasparotto, Gabriele Matino, and Melissa Conn.
David Rosand’s Paolo Veronese is a masterly account of the Venetian painter’s artistic achievement, demonstrating a complete command of the literature and scholarly issues, insightful interpretations of individual paintings and drawings, and a marvelously elegant prose style. Careful readings of specific paintings, including those at the church of San Sebastiano, provide the reader the opportunity to put into practice the author’s conviction that our own responses to paintings will guide their interpretation.
Triumphant and majestic are just two of the adjectives often used to describe the exceptional decorative program that Paolo Veronese created in the church of San Sebastiano, one of the most extraordinary jewels of the Venetian Renaissance. The Church of San Sebastiano in Venice: A Guide addresses every aspect of Veronese’s comprehensive contribution to the decoration of the church.
Reception to Follow.
