Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979) was an American art collector who described herself as “addicted to art”. A member of the wealthy Guggenheim family in New York City, she deliberately chose an alternate lifestyle that culminated with gathering a collection of 20th century avant-garde art, in London, New York and Venice where she lived from 1949 and where she was to establish her museum. Dr. Philip Rylands served as deputy director and later director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice for more than three decades, guiding it to become the most visited museum of modern art in Italy. He will describe his impressions of Peggy Guggenheim and of her career.
Presented by Philip Rylands, who earned a Ph.D. from Cambridge University and has published books about the church of the Madonna dell’Orto in Venice (1976), the history of the Venice Biennale (1993), and Peggy Guggenheim (2004). He has curated exhibitions, taught at several universities, and since 2019 has been the President and CEO of the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida.
