“Venice was surely built to be painted by Canaletto and Turner.” So wrote a British newspaper in 1842. Despite visiting Venice on only three occasions, J.M.W. Turner painted some of the city’s most compelling depictions.
In this lecture, Dr. Yarker will lead us around Venice in Turner’s footsteps, exploring his response to the city, its architecture, and its history. The lecture coincides with the opening of Turner’s Modern World at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a major international exhibition which features several of Turner’s greatest Venetian scenes.
Presented by Jonny Yarker, a specialist in British Art and a director of Lowell Libson & Jonny Yarker Ltd. in London. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.
