Drawing from his recently-published work Save Venice Inc.: American Philanthropy and Art Conservation in Italy, 1966-2021, Professor Carlsmith will describe the fruitful relationship between Wellesley and Save Venice Inc. In 1971 Wellesley art historian and museum director John McAndrew founded Save Venice to conserve art and architecture in Venice. For four decades Wellesley professor Peter Fergusson helped to direct the Boston chapter along with his spouse, Wellesley art history professor Lilian Armstrong. They and other Wellesley alumnae and faculty have championed Save Venice for decades in its mission to preserve and protect the cultural patrimony of Venice.
Additional reflections will be offered by Susan Angelastro (Save Venice Boston) and Frederick Ilchman (MFA Boston, Save Venice Inc.)
Copies of Christopher Carlsmith’s book Save Venice Inc. will be available for purchase.
Light refreshments will be served.
This free event is intended for members of Save Venice and of the Wellesley community; additional guests are welcome as space allows and with pre-registration.
