Save Venice has won a Travel + Leisure Global Vision Award 2023

Mar 07, 2023

Travel + Leisure has named Save Venice a Global Vision Award 2023 winner! The Global Vision Awards celebrate innovators and innovations that are leading the world to a more sustainable, inclusive future.

During the last 50 years, Save Venice has become the foremost funder from North America of Venice’s artistic patrimony, sponsoring the conservation treatment of nearly 2,000 works of art and architecture across the city and lagoon. Over the past decade alone the organization has funded restoration projects and educational initiatives in Venice totaling over $18 million. Projects range in scale from entire churches (Santa Maria dei Miracoli) to individual paintings (Titian’s Assunta in the Basilica dei Frari) and frescos (Paolo Veronese’s decorative cycle in San Sebastiano), sculptures, manuscripts and neighborhood wellheads.

The organization also celebrates the successful conclusion of major conservation projects including the centerpiece 50th Anniversary-year restorations of 2,442 square feet of Byzantine apse mosaics in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta on the island of Torcello in 2022; the Scuola Italiana (Italian Synagogue) in the Jewish Ghetto of Venice in 2023; the apse mosaics of the Basilica of Santa Maria and San Donato now underway through summer 2023 on Murano; and exciting new initiatives including the Women Artists of Venice (WAV) to recover the history of women artists and artisans who were born in or active in Venice in the early modern period through an ambitious program of conservations and new research.

Save Venice President, Charles Tolbert said, “We are incredibly honored to receive this award. We pride ourselves on hosting events and experiences that celebrate the beauty and unique history of Venice. Our conservation work to preserve the city’s artistic treasures and our fundraising efforts also provide unparalleled support to the economy of Venice. None of this would be possible without our local experts and partners in Venice who have helped us achieve great success for over five decades.”

Award honorees demonstrate thought leadership and creative problem-solving, taking actionable, quantifiable steps to protect communities and environments around the world. They also inspire their industry colleagues and travelers to do their part for sustainable travel and experiences.

Travel + Leisure editors state, “Traveling with positive intent and impact has never been more vital.” To arrive at this year’s list of 25 honorees, nominations were sourced from an esteemed panel of industry leaders and experts across the travel, hospitality, retail, and non-profit sectors, along with Travel + Leisure editors and correspondents. The final winner selections were made by Travel + Leisure editors.
