Save Venice has once again pledged funding to the Istituto Veneto per i Beni Culturali restoration school for program expansion and new fieldwork opportunities. The funding will support the restoration of the mosaic floor in the portico of the Ca’ D’Oro. Comprised of precious antique marbles and similar in design to the floor of the Basilica San Marco, the floor was a modern addition to the Ca’ d’Oro, laid by then Ca’ D’Oro owner Giorgio Franchetti in the early 1900s.
Through their coursework on stone and mosaic conservation, students will provide vital conservative maintenance on the floor, which is experiencing condition problems due to constant exposure to high water, salt deposits, and direct sunlight. Click here to watch a short video about this project produced by the IVBC students.
This is Save Venice’s third grant to the Istituto Veneto per I Beni Culturali to promote the cultivation of future conservators. In 2017, funding from Save Venice enabled the IVBC to refurbish unused restoration laboratories in the Ca’ D’Oro, creating a modernized paper conservation lab and painting and frames lab. This allowed students to opportunity to restore gilded frames and historic maps and documents from the museum.
You can join Save Venice in our support of the IVBC restoration school by making a contribution. Contact kim@savevenice.org for more information.
