Restored in 2004 with funding from an anonymous donor in honor of Frederick Ilchman.
Domenico Tintoretto’s painting of the Arrival of Saint Mark’s Body in Venice was produced as part of a series of paintings for the Scuola Grande di San Marco; in the narrative cycle, it follows Saint Mark Blessing the Origins of Venice and the Transport of the Body of Saint Mark.
The work depicts prominent Venetian figures, including the Doge, the Patriarch, and other religious and government officials, participating in the ceremonious arrival of Saint Mark’s body in Venice in the year 828. In the background, ghost-like figures of the members of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, dressed in their ceremonial white hooded robes, process behind the body of the saint as it is carried from the docked ship towards the city.
The painting was restored by conservator Andrea Libralesso, with the guidance of project director Luca Caburlotto of the Superintendency of Fine Arts of Venice.
For select projects, conservation dossiers in Italian containing limited textual and photographic documentation may be available for consultation by appointment at the Venice office of Save Venice and the Rosand Library & Study Center. For inquiries, please contact us at venice@savevenice.org.
