Carved Wooden Elements in the Church of San Giovanni in Bragora

Unidentified woodcarvers | Church of San Giovanni in Bragora

Donors

Restored in 1996-1997 with Save Venice general funds.

History

On the back wall of the presbytery of San Giovanni in Bragora, below Cima da Conegliano’s altarpiece of the Baptism of Christ, are the church’s eighteenth-century choir stalls, carved from wood. Between the two choir sections is a marble throne dating to the Renaissance, with a wooden insert that forms the seat of the throne. The door to the sacristy and smaller reliquary doors are further fine examples of Venetian craftsmanship in wood, employing fir, walnut, briarwood and rosewood in their designs.
