Jacobello del Fiore’s Priest in Prayer (Portrait of Father Filippo) at Sant’Alvise

Jacobello del Fiore (c. 1370–1439) [attr.] | Church of Sant’Alvise

Donors

Restored in 1994 with Save Venice general funds.

History

Not much is known about this particular panel, other than that it is likely a fragment from a larger triptych or polyptych. The fact that this section survives while there is no evidence of the larger painting to which it belonged appears to highlight its individual importance.

Scholars have attributed the work to Jacobello del Fiore, who was born between 1370 and 1380 and is known to have worked in Venice — as well as Pesaro, in the Marche region of Italy — from 1400 through the late 1430s.
