Frescoes of Prophets and Architectural Details in the Vestibule of the Sacristy of San Salvador

Unidentified artist | Church of San Salvador

Donors

Restored from 2007 to 2009 with Save Venice general funds.

History

As a continuation of the successful 2003–04 campaign to restore the wall and ceiling frescoes in the sacristy of San Salvador, Save Venice provided further funding to conserve fresco fragments in the vestibule of the sacristy.

Under layers of whitewash and plaster, the restoration uncovered two lunettes depicting the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah framed by fictive rosette-filled coffers, traces of a leaf pattern in the cupola, and the outlines of a large shell in the niche behind the sixteenth-century carved marble washbasin, which conservators also restored. A fragment of a mosaic floor, now displayed on the vestibule wall, benefited from conservation treatment as well.
