Restored in 1993 with Save Venice general funds.
In this sculpture attributed to the workshop of Jacopo Sansovino, the Virgin Mary sits on a rock and protects the sleeping Christ Child with her cloak. The Capuchin friars of the church of the Santissimo Redentore may have acquired this small sculpture, now housed in the church’s sacristy, along with the books and objects belonging to Tommaso Rangone, one of Sansovino’s most important private patrons.
In the eighteenth century the bronze sculpture was gilded, adapting it to the taste of that time. This gilding, which had deteriorated and been heavily repainted through the years, was removed during restoration, returning the sculpture to its original bronze appearance.
The sculpture was restored by conservator Marica Petkovic, with the guidance of project director Annalisa Perissa of the Superintendency of Fine Arts of Venice.
For select projects, conservation dossiers in Italian containing limited textual and photographic documentation may be available for consultation by appointment at the Venice office of Save Venice and the Rosand Library & Study Center. For inquiries, please contact us at venice@savevenice.org.
