Restored in 1987 with Save Venice general funds.
Located above Vittore Carpaccio’s Supper at Emmaus in the church of San Salvador, this dramatic lunette depicts the resurrected Christ rising from the tomb in an explosive aureole of light, as the overwhelmed guards watch in disbelief from either side.
The work was likely painted by the Paduan artist Stefano dell’Arzere, to whom the monumental canvas of the Martyrdom of Saint Theodore, completed in 1553 for the same church, is also attributed.
The painting was restored by conservators Serafino and Ferruccio Volpin, with the guidance of project director Ettore Merkel of the Superintendency of Fine Arts of Venice.
For select projects, conservation dossiers in Italian containing limited textual and photographic documentation may be available for consultation by appointment at the Venice office of Save Venice and the Rosand Library & Study Center. For inquiries, please contact us at venice@savevenice.org.
