Glory of Saint Theodore Lunette at San Salvador

Unidentified Veneto artist | Church of San Salvador

Donors

Restored in 1987 with Save Venice general funds.

History

Saint Theodore, the patron saint of Venice prior to Saint Mark, is shown rising to glory in a lunette probably painted by an artist from the Veneto in the early eighteenth century. Theodore is depicted as a Roman soldier and is elevated towards heaven on a cloud that is borne up by angels. The work is located above the painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Theodore, attributed to Stefano dell’Arzere.

This lunette was heavily damaged and subsequently repainted extensively in the nineteenth century, making a precise attribution difficult.
